Community engagement has been a core focus of Maya’s art throughout her career. She creates an environment of learning and belonging for adults and children alike, prioritizing access to creativity and community.

Maya regularly works with groups in the lead-up to large-scale festivals and events, facilitating the creation of processional art that participants carry, transforming them into part of the performance. Alongside these prominent lantern and large-scale illuminated builds (featured heavily in her UK and international work), Maya also leads many varied standalone workshops in diverse mediums.

Govandi Arts Festival Mumbai - 2023

In 2023, for the inaugural Govandi Arts Festival in Mumbai, India, working alongside Lamplighters Arts CIC, in collaboration with Community Design Agency, and Streets Reimagined to bring a unique vision to life.

My engagement with WOMAD Festivals has been a profound and enduring journey, a vibrant thread woven through the tapestry of my artistic career since its inception in 2002.

Calais Lantern Project - Light Relief - 2015

In the winter of 2015, amidst the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Calais and deeply moved by the difficult conditions faced by refugees in the area known as 'the jungle,' Maya felt a compelling urge to offer a gesture of light and creative connection.

Walcot Nation Day 2000: Walcot Waives The Rules

From initial concept to the vibrant culmination of the procession, coordinated, facilitated, and delivered immersive carnival structure and costume workshops for a Walcot Nation Day Parade.

WOMAD Charlton Park - 2019

A truly free-spirited family workshop inviting imaginative minds to dive into a treasure trove of scrap materials. With expert artist guidance on hand for dazzling design and clever construction techniques, pure creative joy was unleashed as participants brought their fantastic visions to life.

Sea Serpent - 2021

Commissioned by the Holburne Museum. A focused collaboration with a small group of young people to conceive and construct a giant serpent.

Tiger - 2024

In response to the 'Neon Dreams' exhibition by Chila Burman at the Holburne Museum, Maya undertook a captivating community project for the Festival of Light celebrations in October 2024.

Artseen - Bringing the Light Fantastic - 2020

Emerging from a pre-pandemic vision to revitalize Bath's enduring lantern tradition, 'Bringing the Light Fantastic' ingeniously navigated the complexities of lockdown to foster community and connection. Responding to the constraints of social distancing, Creative Director Maya Wolf reimagined the conventional procession.

Gloucester Lantern Procession: 2011-2024

For over a decade, Maya has been a key lead artist within a select team of six artist for the annual Gloucester Lantern Procession.

Willow Shelter with Bee Sculpture - 2016

A hazel and willow shelter housing a collaborative sculpture project. Working with a local secondary school.

Willow Arbour - 2002

Commissioned living willow arbor at Corsham Regis School, created collaboratively with young students who also designed 'stained glass' window panels and two angelic figures for the entrance.

Wishing Tree - 2001

Interactive wishing tree designed and built for the Bath Children's Art Festival. Inviting visitors to add their wish to the tree. At the end of the festival the tree was fully laden with heart warming and often poignant wishes.

Bath International Music Festival: 1999 - 2006

During a formative period in her early community arts career, Maya designed and facilitated the creation of processional structures and costumes for the opening night of the Bath International Music Festival.

Walcot Nation Day 2001: ‘Alice in Walcot Street’

Building upon the success of the previous year's community engagement, 2001 saw another series of vibrant workshops organized to craft spectacular carnival structures and costumes for the Walcot Nation Day Parade.
