Performance
Interactivity and public engagement are central to Maya's performance work. Her practice spans a diverse range of creations, from larger-than-life puppets and multimedia dancing butterflies to interactive costumed statues. She has created and performed works for prestigious venues such as the Tate Modern and Buckingham Palace, and transient walkabout pieces including stilted CCTV infrastructure. Through these works, Maya's performance draws the audience to reflect on their role as both observer and observed.
The transience and locality of her work are exemplified in collaborations with carnivals, processions, and other community events. Here, beyond the visual spectacle, performance takes center stage. When guiding community-built creations, the principles of puppetry and performative action are fundamental, breathing life into the structures and fostering a dynamic interplay between art and participation.
