what is 40k

This is a sub-site of the wolfworks, and has been created to give a place to my hobby. At the age of 13 I went to David and Sheila's house for Sunday Dinner. Their son (also David) showed me a book all about a future war between mankind and a whole galaxy of xenos and the damned. It planted a seed in my mind about these super soldiers who were the front line in the fight to secure humanities survival in the harshness of the 41st Millennium I always knew that the background story was to support a game, but I assumed that the game would be like Dungeons and Dragons and have loads of silly stuff in it with 20 sided dice. I was never that fussed about making models or painting them, as I had sucked so badly as a child at doing anything like that.

I would go into the Games Workshop on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh and look on at awe at these people playing very animated games, and I thought that I would never be able to join them. The back story or "fluff" as it is referred to was of much more interest to me, the ultimate tale of rise and fall and good versus evil? It was an age old story set amongst a dirty, broken universe that machines broke down and nothing could beat a bolt rifle and a sword. The story that set my imagination alight is here, you don't need to know anything else, just read it and let it soak into your imagination.

So....... many years pass, and about 4 times a year I would wander into the shop and look lost and bewildered, so much so that people asked if I was in the right shop. I felt so angry because secretly I wanted to be part of the world, but with each passing year I thought I was growing further and further away from it.

Fast forward to 2006 when I first met up with Dave. Dave was a collector of loads of different types of miniatures and he had in his collection a squad of sniper scouts. He very kindly offered to give me a few space marines to try building and painting, but I didn't take him up on his offer for a few months. The rest as they say is history.

Roddy, Rich, Dave, Dan, Ross and I have all come out of the woodwork and we all have different armies and we love going up against each other, it is so much fun when you are winning and so hard to take when you get beat. I have learned more about military tactics and force composition whilst playing against the rest of them that it is hard not to take it personally when you best laid plans are left as a smoking ruin on a blood soaked battlefield.

hobby

This hobby is more addictive than crack or heroin (and only slightly cheaper!) but it has given me so much. I have put down some of the lessons I have learned along the way to try and help you avoid the mistakes that I made.

To see my army click on players & armies at the top then select Don, to check out everyone else's armies click on the person you want to see's name.
